In considering my pedagogical practice and its development since I started teaching, I found the sections of Effectiveness and Classroom Culture to be very intertwined. One influences the other in such a way that if a productive culture is not established, where risk-taking and valuing process over product is clear, achieving effectiveness is challenging, . Particularly in an ensemble and performance based class, the culture we develop in the classroom allows for learning to happen (or not). Part of developing a culture where pedagogy can be effective is to make the classroom a space where every student is valued. This is made possible with Differentiation, the final category in this section. By manipulating the multi-faceted nature of music, I am able to find avenues of access to our content for all students regardless of skill, previous knowledge or talent. My goal is to create a culture of team work where everyone’s contribution is valued and process is praised over product.
